Thermal Expansion

Q: What do I precharge my thermal expansion tank to?
A: The precharge in your thermal expansion tank needs to be matched to the incoming water pressure to your home. The precharge needs to be set prior to installation of your expansion tank.

Q: What orientation can I install my thermal expansion tank?
A: It is recommended to install your thermal expansion tank in the vertical, downward orientation. However, alternative orientations are acceptable including horizontal when properly supported outlined in the provided installation and operation manual.

Q: Where can I find my Turbulator?
A: The Turbulator is a flow device provided with Therm-X-Trol models. The inline expansion tanks contain this Turbulator loose in the box and must be inserted prior to system installation. The stand model Therm-X-Trol’s will have this device installed at the factory.

Q: Where should I install my thermal expansion tank?
A: Your thermal expansion tank should be installed on the cold-water inlet of your water heater. If a backflow or check valve is present in your system, the expansion tank will need to be located after the valve, prior to your water heater.

Q: How do I know if my thermal expansion tank needs to be replaced?
A: In order to determine if your thermal expansion tank needs to be replaced, check the air pressure. Turn off the water supply to your home and open a hot water tap until the water stops. Remove plastic cap from the air valve to check the air pressure. If the pressure is low, the expansion tank should be replaced.

Indirect-Fired Water Heaters

Q: How does an indirect-fired water heater work?
A: An indirect-fired water heater operates as a separate heating zone off a boiler. The boiler heats water that will flow through a heat exchanger in the indirect to heat domestic water without mixing the liquids.

Q: Will my boiler need to run during summer months?
A: Yes. Your boiler will need to run in non-heating months to generate hot water for your indirect.

Q: Are indirect-fired water heaters efficient?
Yes! Indirect-fired water heaters are especially efficient when paired with high efficiency boilers. Indirects feature high quality insulation to minimize heat loss.

Q: Can I use my indirect to heat something other than my domestic hot water?
A: It is not recommended to use an indirect water heater to heat anything other than domestic water.

Q: How do I size an indirect-fired water heater?
A: Sizing an indirect-fired water heater will depend on your hot water demand and BTU capacity of your boiler. Consult a professional installer to determine system requirements and options available.

City Pressure Boosters

Q: Can I use an Amtrol Pressuriser on a well system?
A: It is recommended to use an Amtrol Pressuriser on city water applications only.

Q: What flow rates is the Amtrol Pressuriser rated for?
A: The Amtrol Pressuriser can boost pressure with incoming flows from 3 GPM to 30 GPM. Please refer to the performance pump curve for pump ratings.

Q: I have low water pressure when I have multiple fixtures on. Do I need a pressure booster?
A: Low flow and low pressure are two different problems that require two different solutions. The Amtrol Pressuriser is unique in that it has storage capacity from the factory to assist with both low flow and low-pressure situations. Please refer to the product specifications for more information.

A: Yes, the Amtrol Pressuriser can be installed with 115V or 230V. It is factory wired to 115V.

Q: Does the Amtrol Pressuriser have a low water cutoff?
A: Yes. The factory supplied pressure switch has a low water cutoff safety.
